Free agent CB Vontae Davis is on his way to the airport after visiting with the #Raiders. Told me he met w/t new coaching staff. Talked about building on the group of players they have. On his way home to "reflect on my visits for a couple days or so. Other teams interested too."

Raiders free agency: Jerick McKinnon could play a Charlie Garner role

With uncertainty surrounding Marshawn Lynch for the Raiders in 2018, the team may want to go out and spend some money on Minnesota’s Jerick McKinnon.

Over the last seven weeks of the Oakland Raiders 2017 season, running back Marshawn Lynch was the feature back the fans were hoping he would be all season. Lynch ran hard in the second half of the season, and finished with over 800 yards rushing. In a season where the strife between the organization and the City of Oakland was apparent, Lynch served as an olive branch of peace, even if it was for only one season.

Heading into next season, there is no certainty that Lynch will be on the roster. The Raiders have until March 18 to cut him, or they will have to pay him a $1 million roster bonus. Raiders head coach Jon Gruden has said that he would like a Lynch that is “all-in” if he is to be the team’s feature back this season, though the team may want to go with a feature back that can do more than just run the ball.

During the 2001 season, which was Gruden’s last with  the team before being shipped to Tampa Bay, 29-year old Charlie Garner was the feature back for the team. Garner was a do-everything back that season, leading the team in rushing yards (839), while finishing third on the team in receiving yards (578). The Raiders had both Tim Brown and Jerry Rice go over 1,000 yards receiving that season, so finishing No. 3 behind those two men is quite the accomplishment.

Looking at the current free agent class, there is one running back who certainly sticks out as a player who could have the same impact as Garner did that season. Sure, Le’Veon Bell and Carlos Hyde are both technically free agents, but the expectation is that they will return to both the Pittsburgh Steelers, and San Francisco 49ers respectively. Minnesota Vikings running back Jerick McKinnon will likely test the free agent waters, and the Raiders could be a nice landing spot.

The Vikings are set at running back with Dalvin Cook returning from a torn up knee, as he showed flashes of brilliance before being injured in 2017. Former Raiders running back Latavius Murray is also in the mix in the Twin Cities, and he has a nice season with the Vikings last year. McKinnon could be the odd man out, and the Raiders would be wise to at least gauge the interest of the 25-year old.

McKinnon has gotten better every season with the Vikings, and he was really a huge part of their passing game in 2017. The speedster was targeted 68 times, hauling in 51 balls for over 400 yards receiving. Playing in a part-time role, McKinnon had nearly 1,000 yards from scrimmage, which would put him only behind Marshawn Lynch on the 2017 Raiders. There is not a lot of tread on the tire with McKinnon, and the price certainly could be right.

I'm pretty sure at this point we'll be linked to every single free agent that fills a need for us. Even if it doesn't make sense.

Johnson, Smith, Conley and Resign Carrie. Getting rid of Smith would be a mistake.

Johnson is over rated because he's big. He's a pretty average corner. Lamarcus Joyner is a Swiss army knife as a safety and could fill in great for Reggie Nelson. That would really help our secondary. He and Joseph could be a great safety tandem that could cover and thump in the run. They would be interchangeable.

Worth a call to his agent

Ian Rapoport @RapSheet

The #Rams are expected to apply the franchise tag to a player tomorrow. They are still undecided between WR Sammy Watkins and S Lamarcus Joyner. Tagging one means the other may test the market.

Looks like Joyner might get the tag... Franchise money for a WR is sky high, doubt they wanna pay Watkins that much...guaranteed, for 1 year, with his injury history...

With that said, call me crazy... but I'd take a look at Watkins... for the right price...

Raiders A Team To “Keep An Eye On” For Muhammad Wilkerson
Posted: Mar 6th, 2018 | Author: RaidersBeat.com

Add another name to the list of high profile free agents presently being linked to the Raiders.

Mo Wilkerson.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Wilkerson is expected to visit the Packers, but Rapoport said to “keep an eye on the Oakland Raiders” to be another option for the 28 year-old defensive tackle.

Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie was said to have been interested in Wilkerson going all the way back to 2015 when it was believed the Jets were trying to trade him – or maybe more accurately, when Wilkerson’s agent was trying to get the Jets to trade him.

Wilkerson isn’t expected to command anywhere near the money he was paid by the Jets and it’s likely that he’ll end up weighing a handful on one or two-year “prove-it” deals.

For what it’s worth, defensive tackle is arguably the weakest position group on the Raiders roster. As of now, the only defensive tackles under contract in Oakland are Darius Latham, Treyvon Hester, and Eddie Vanderdoes, who is recovering from an ACL tear suffered in the final game of the season.
