130 year wait for a trophy finally ends!!!!!
« on: May 25, 2014, 03:26:08 AM »

So, I live in Perth, a small city in Scotland with a population of only about 45,000. It's a relatively small, but very nice place to live. Our local football (soccer) team was formed in 1884 and has had various ups and downs through out it 130 year history. We've had several famous people (in the soccer world) pass through the our doors and we have won several lower division titles but never a single major trophy in our entire history.

In the 1980's we nearly went completely out of business due to financial hardships, but a local businessman rescued the club, made a deal with a local supermarket which included getting all our debts paid off and a new stadium being built. It only holds 10,000, but we are a relatively small club. Ever since that day we have operated within our means, never borrowing a single penny. With an average attendance at games around the 4000 mark and limited sponsorship deals, living within our means is a very tricky business. We've seen other teams lure our players away on bigger contracts only for those teams to go bust, or enter financial administration years down the line. They couldn't afford those contracts either, but it didn't stop them stealing our players.

Anyway, history was made last week when St Johnstone FC defied the odds and won the Scottish Cup (also the world's oldest football trophy) for the first time in it's history. Despite many other teams in the country having far bigger budgets and much bigger fan bases we went through to Glasgow with 15,000 people (a third of the population of Perth) for the Cup Final, and came away 2-0 winners against local rivals Dundee United.

It was a very proud and very emotional day, and celebrations lasted well into the night. The next day there was an open-top bus procession through the city with the team and the trophy.

I know this will be of limited interest to many here, which is fine, but it was such a big day for my local team and for me personally, I just thought I'd share. ;D

Lifting the trophy.

Very very cool bra.

The longer the wait, the sweeter the taste.

Big props to Perth Scotland.

And props to you. Hopefully you lifted a few pints to celebrate.

Cheers Tibs. Yep, I started started off with a fine single malt whisky, then had a fair few pints after that. The whole city was buzzing that night.

And here's another freaky fact. Our top scorer this year is a Perth born lad called Stevie May and his shirt number is 17. The game was played on May 17th. ;D

So how old/young is this team age wise? Do you have a core that can carry you forward for the next couple seasons?

It's a bit of a mix Tibs. Some older pros who were deemed to be finished or not good enough for bigger teams and some young guys coming through the youth system or not given a proper chance at other clubs. we'll probably keep the core of them for the next couple of years.

Congrats, Prole!  Look forward to seeing them in next year's UEFA Champions' League!

It doesn't quite work like that Sonic.

Over the course of a season teams complete in several different tournaments. The League, two different knock-out cups and, depending on the team, a European competition.

It won't be the UEFA Champions League that St Johnstone are in, that's reserved for the League champions in Scotland, in this case Celtic. But we will be in the UEFA Europa League, which is for Cup winners and league runners-up.

Since we are the main Cup winners we'll be going into the qualifiers for the Europa League. We were in it last season too, where we knocked Rosenburg, a top Norwegian team, out of the qualifiers. That in itself was a huge result for us.

The sad truth is though, if we actually got through the qualifiers and reached the Europa League proper it would probably be our un-doing as we simply wouldn't have a big enough squad to cope. Only teams with big budgets and large squads are able to compete at that level because you still need to perform at a high standard in your home competitions.

It's still great to be in European competition as the supporters get a few trips across Europe and we might just cause another wee upset. ;D
