Goodbye Twinkies - Hostess to Liquidate
«

From the "Dear God, this can't be happening" department, Hostess has elected to liquidate the company rather than take part in a protracted labor struggle. This means iconic snacks such as Twinkies, SnoBalls and Ding Dongs will no longer be available. They're also taking Dolly Madison (Zingers) and Drakes (Devil Dogs) with them.
I think I'm starting to buy into the whole Mayan calendar schlock.
It's a sad day folks.

It is highly unlikely that twinkees will disappear to iconic. They are required to sell off assets to pay creditors which includes the trademark and rights for the twinkees and Ho Ho brands. Someone will pick it up. (Flowers?)

I wonder how many of the union guys are walking around thinking/saying "wtf just happened." I have a difficult time feeling too bad for them.

The bad news is the lost jobs. The good news is that Americans love sweets so the Americans will merely spend their dollar on a different kind of "fat cake" which will create new jobs someplace else.

I suppose they considered it a bluff?
Hostess has had problems competing for the last several years due to labor strife. This was the final straw.
I guess a Pyrrhic victory is better than accepting pay cuts across the board.

This was not on union. They agreed to concessions. Bakers rejected offer citing 8%pay cut and more contribution towards health care. Union urged a revote and bakers still rejected. Old timers make 18$hr but newer >2000 only 10$hr. Union still has jobs bakers said theyd rather lose jobs due to poor working conditions and benefits. Look for bimbo or flowers to snatch up brands. Bimbo locale but flowers has tastycakes and deeper marketing pockets a reason cited for demise. Either way more people out of work right before holidays and one guy 3 months away from retirement lost all retirement package.

They could have just quit and taken their underpaid talents to someone who would pay them what they were worth...if they were actually underpaid. Sounds to me like they had a pretty good deal for unskilled labor. The benefit package was pretty sweet...no pun intended.
